A-League Bid Success

29 June 2018

The United for Macarthur A-League bid has passed a major milestone in its goal to field a new team as part of the Football Federation Australia (FFA) expansion of the A-League competition from 2019/2020.

The FFA announced today that United for Macarthur will progress to stage two of the process and will be invited to submit a request for proposal to join the expanded competition.

The announcement came five weeks after the United for Macarthur bid, championed by Campbelltown City Council, responded to an invitation by the FFA for expressions of interest.

Council submitted an Expression of Interest document in May. It was one of 15 bids from across the country.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr George Brticevic, welcomed the announcement.

“This is a fantastic result,” he said.

“Council has led the preparation of the United for Macarthur A-League bid, on behalf of the region. The United for Macarthur bid has achieved bipartisan support from all Federal and State members of Parliament within our Region and strong support from both Camden and Wollondilly Council’s. I would like to thank to all those who have supported the United for Macarthur Bid in particular Macarthur Football Association, our business community, broader sports community and the many residents who have registered their support through the website.

“Special thanks have to go to our Sporting Ambassador Brett Emerton, Community Ambassador Kaarle McCulloch and Business Ambassador Lang Walker.

“Thanks also to the FFA for the opportunity to put forward our bid to become the home of a new A-League team in one of the fastest growing regions of Sydney.

“Council is very proud the U4M bid has progressed to the next stage in the FFA’s process and is looking forward to a strong response being submitted on behalf of the Region to secure an A-League team from Macarthur and the broader region.

“If successful, a Macarthur A-League team would bring endless benefits to the community.

“It will instill further pride in our community, put us on the map, attract visitors to the region and open up professional pathways for kids.”
